How to Dice a Tomato
How to Dice a Tomato Skill Level: Moderate (for the average person) Active Time: 5-10 minutes Total Preparation Time: 10 minutes
WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DICE A TOMATO Prepare your work area Splash of cold water Vegetable peeler Knife Cutting board Measuring spoons Bowl or storage container
PREPARATION Tear off 3 or 4 paper towels. Wet them under running water and ring out until they are damp, but not dripping wet. Spread the damp paper towels on your counter top. Arrange your cutting board so it is resting on the edge of the counter top closest to you, with one of its short ends right up against the edge of the counter where it meets your stove top. This will give you a stable surface to work on.
STEP 1: Wash your hands.
STEP 2: Rinse the tomato and remove the stem. Cut the tomato in half from top to bottom.
If you are using a smaller tomato, cut it into quarters instead of halves. If you are using a larger tomato, cut it into sixths or eighths, depending on how big you want your dice to be.
STEP 3: Hold one half of the tomato in your hand and use a vegetable peeler to peel away the skin. Start at one end of the tomato and peel toward the opposite end.
If the skin is tough and doesn’t want to come off easily, dunk the peeled section of the tomato back into the bowl of water and soak for about a minute. This will cause the skin to soften so you can easily scrape it away with the peeler.
STEP 4: Once you have peeled both halves of the tomato, return them to your work surface and cut each half again in half from top to bottom, creating 4 quarters.
When dicing these smaller pieces of tomato, you can quarter or halve them first depending on how big or small you want your dice to be. If any seeds slip out during cutting, place those pieces on top of one another and slice them together. Be sure not to mix your diced tomatoes with the seeds; set them aside for use in another recipe
