What exactly are All Dressed Chips?

According to H.J Heinz Co: “All Dressed is a flavor sensation that delivers the tastes of tomato, salt and vinegar, and barbecue in one chip.” [1]

So what’s in these chips that makes them taste like all three flavors? Let’s find out.

Ingredients: Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Corn and/or Canola Oil), Salt and Seasoning (including Maltodextrin).

No surprise there; potatoes and oil sound appetizing enough already. However, we may not be paying attention to the unappetizing ingredients lurking under the radar…yet. Maltodextrin is a corn-derived sugar used as a thickener or filler similar to how wheat is used in bread. It’s not as bad for you as high fructose corn syrup, but it’s still a sugar nonetheless. So what does that mean for the taste of All Dressed Chips?

Well, according to Dietitian Leslie Beck: “Barbecue sauce, salt and vinegar flavours are all quite strong. The addition of maltodextrin will make these flavours even stronger.”

In other words, the addition of maltodextrin intensifies the salty, vinegary and BBQ flavors in the chip, making them taste more intense than they would without it.

What makes All Dressed chips so good?

It’s hard to place, but the flavors are unlike any chip I’ve had before. The first taste is salt and vinegar like you would expect, but after that it seems like there’s a bit of everything on your tongue – sour cream & onion, barbecue, even ketchup. It’s sort of indescribable because it doesn’t seem possible for one chip to have so many flavors. And yet…

The official website says: “We put all the good stuff in our chips – real aged cheddar cheese, savory spices and delicious seasonings – for an All Dressed experience.”

Similarities with McChicken Sandwich : Made with a bun and chicken patty + nothing else Similarities with KFC Original Recipe : 11 herbs and spices

The All Dressed chip’s flavor profile can be best described as a mix of the McChicken sandwich and KFC’s Original Recipe. This isn’t surprising, as both of these dishes use similar seasonings. The end result is a chip that is salty, savory, and slightly sour – all at the same time. It’s absolutely delicious, and I can’t get enough of them!

If you’re looking for a chip that is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before, then I highly recommend giving All Dressed chips a try. You won’t be disappointed!

Where did the All-Dressed flavor come from?

Well, it’s long been a staple of Canadian cuisine. For decades, the flavor profile – tangy sweetness with hints of savory spices – has satisfied the country’s hunger for all things ketchup-related.

Indeed, Canada is one of Lay’s top three markets for this delicious chip, alongside Mexico and the United States. The advent of All Dressed was inevitable, as Canada itself represents an amalgamation of various cultures and cuisines.

“Canada is known to be notoriously multicultural,” says Lay’s Marketing Director Nicole Reickert in an interview with MH. “A mashup between all sorts of different backgrounds makes up the fabric of our food culture.”

And so does All Dressed – uniting an entire nation under one flavor.

Interestingly, All Dressed wasn’t actually created in Canada at all. It was developed in the United States by Frito-Lay’s Flavor Development team, who were looking to create a distinctly Canadian chip.

“Our team was tasked with creating a uniquely Canadian flavor that would resonate with consumers,” says Reickert. “All Dressed stood out as the perfect candidate.”

The rest, as they say, is history. All Dressed quickly became a hit with Canadians of all ages and backgrounds, and has remained one of the most popular flavors on the market ever since.

So what makes All Dressed so special? Well, it’s hard to put your finger on just one thing.
