It seems that the first mention of this sauce was in a 1960s cookbook called The Art of American West Coast Cookery  (edited by Milo Denlinger), where it was simply described as “a fiery blend of chiles, spices, and tomato catsup.”

Since then, several recipe variations have surfaced online with various ingredients – most notably pineapple juice – but they all seem to agree on the basics: chiles (most commonly jalapeños), soy sauce, brown sugar, spices like cinnamon & nutmeg, fresh ginger and garlic, tomato paste or ketchup.
